Introduction
Who We Are
Friends of James Ward is an independent charitable non-profit organization founded in 2026 and dedicated to supporting the students, families, and staff of James Ward Elementary School on Chicago's South Side. We are officially approved by the State of Illinois to operate as a charitable organization.
Our organization was founded by parents who believe that every child at James Ward deserves a fully-resourced, vibrant school environment. We exist to bridge the gap between what the school needs and what it receives — through fundraising, community events, and direct investment in school priorities.
We are entirely community-driven. Every dollar we raise goes directly back to James Ward Elementary — to the classrooms, the programs, and the people that make this school a cornerstone of our neighborhood.

Our Mission
What We Do
Collect Donations
We raise funds from families, alumni, local businesses, and community supporters. Every contribution — large or small — makes a direct impact on the students of James Ward Elementary.
Host Fundraising Events
From family fun nights to community fundraisers, we bring the neighborhood together around our school. Our events are designed to be inclusive, fun, and impactful.
Fund School Priorities
We work directly with school leadership to identify and fund the most pressing needs — classroom supplies, enrichment programs, field trips, and community initiatives.
Build Community
We strengthen the bonds between families, staff, and neighbors. A strong school community is the foundation of student success.

Friends of James Ward is led by a dedicated board of community members who volunteer their time and expertise to advance our mission.
Victoria Carpenter
Board President
Victoria leads our organization with passion and deep commitment to the James Ward community. She has been involved with James Ward since her oldest son started 8 years ago. She previously served on the Local School Council (LSC) for 3 years and currently has 2 children attending James Ward.
Siu (Steven) Wu
Chief Fiscal Officer
Steven brings financial expertise and rigorous accountability to our organization. As CFO, he ensures every donated dollar is managed responsibly, transparently, and allocated where it will make the greatest impact for James Ward students.
Daimyon Rivera
Board Member
Daimyon brings invaluable community insight and energy to our board. He currently serves as LSC President. His deep roots in the neighborhood and dedication to educational equity help guide our programs and outreach efforts.
